On the knife-edge ridgeline leading to the summit of the mighty Eiger, we found a single tree, frozen blue, windswept to the North, which hasn’t grown leaves in centuries since the growth of the mountain pushed it up from the plains where it germinated. It rested just on the cornice, below which was a precipitous drop down the North face of the mountain into the Grindelwald Valley eight thousand feet below, but we weren’t frightened. This tree has been there for all of the time, and would be there long enough for us to scrape off a sliver of its coveted wood to imbue our rings with the crystalline power of the Alps.
